European Union fines Google $5 billion

European Union fines Google $5 billion

WASHINGTON-President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the European Union's $5 billion antitrust fine on Alphabet Inc.'s Google is evidence that the bloc has "taken advantage of the USA", and suggested that change is on the way.

"Google has used Android as a vehicle to cement the dominance of its search engine", Vestager said in a statement.

It has not been a good day for Google after it was hit with a record-breaking fine totaling $5 billion or €4.3 billion by the European Commission in relation to Android and the way the company uses its position to bundle search and Chrome with handsets throughout the continent.

He went on to say the bloc has taken advantage of the United States, but won't be doing so for much longer.

Trump appeared to be using the antitrust fine as a weapon in his ongoing trade war with the European Union.

Google has been given 90 days to cease all illegal practices or face additional fines of up to 5% of Google parent company Alphabet's global turnover.

The EU wants Google to stop preloading its Chrome browser and its search engine to Android.

The fine was issued over what the European Union describes as "illegal practices" over how the internet giant implements its search and web browser apps on the devices of Android smartphone makers. It's still early to tell how the Internet search giant will respond to the ruling, but many observers have been quick to point out that Sundar Pichai's memo contains what could be constituted as "warning shots" regarding the openness of Android.

"The FTC should end its decade of inaction and deference, and confront the mounting evidence that Google's business practices have stifled robust competition in a market that is critical to our economy and society", said Democratic Sen.

Android, which runs about 80 per cent of the world's smartphones according to Strategy Analytics, is the most important of a trio of antitrust cases against Google.

Previous year eMarketer forecast almost $50billion would be made by Google in 2017 from mobile ad revenue.
