Trump rejects Putin's proposal to let Russian Federation interrogate United States citizens

Coats, whose office briefs Trump nearly daily on the most classified information on security threats to the United States, made clear that he did not agree with the president's decision to meet with Putin one-on-one, with only translators by their sides.

United States President Donald Trump has asked his administration to formally invite his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to visit America at the end of this year.

Putin said after a summit with Trump in Helsinki on Monday that he might be willing to let U.S. Justice Department investigators question 12 Russians charged with interfering with the 2016 U.S. election if the United States agreed to let Russian investigators question several U.S. citizens.

Trump has come in for bipartisan criticism for what many saw as his unsettling embrace of the Russian strongman this week - and his seeming disavowal of his own intelligence agencies and their assessment that Moscow meddled in the 2016 election.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats gave a rare interview Thursday live at the Aspen Security Forum with NBC's Andrea Mitchell - and he may have infuriated President Donald Trump in the process.

"I wanted him to say that despite what the intelligence community in Russian Federation or what Putin might be saying or what is said here amongst our intelligence community is "No more, knock it off, stay away, get out" and demand that Russian Federation stay away when it comes to our elections, and I didn't hear that and I didn't hear that in his walk back so I'm still waiting", Murkowski said.

Inside the White House, Trump's advisers were in an uproar over Coats's interview in Aspen, Colo.

The Russian leader said those forces appeared ready to sacrifice U.S.jobs and hurt the USA economy while waging their political battle.

In an interview with CNBC television, Trump said "getting along with President Putin, getting along with Russia's a positive, not a negative".

"I look forward to our second meeting so that we can start implementing some of the many things discussed", Trump said.

He said he hadn't seen Trump's invitation himself, but that "Russia was always open to such proposals".

Trump has had a tense relationship with USA intelligence agencies since before he was elected - largely due to their conclusion that Putin ordered "an influence campaign" in 2016 aimed at helping the Trump campaign and harming his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.

After a long pause, Coats said, "That's a place I don't really go to publicly".

Trump has come under widespread domestic criticism about the meeting.

Asked by Glor again on Wednesday whether he thinks the threat is ongoing, Mr. Trump said he would accept Coats' conclusion.

On Wednesday, the Russian Prosecutor General's office listed Americans it wanted to question for "illegal activities", including Michael McFaul, who was USA ambassador to Russia under Democratic former President Barack Obama.

Putin doesn't blame Trump for that. I will say this, I don't see any reason why it would be.

"They are feeding millions of their people stories", he said. Russian officials worry that domestic turmoil in the USA will hamper potential future cooperation on Syria or arms control discussed at the summit. He says with that pressure on him, why shouldn't the US go forward and see what happens.
