Large Liquid Water Lake Just Discovered Beneath the Surface of Mars

Although the temperature is expected to be below the freezing point of pure water, Orosei noted that dissolved salts of magnesium, calcium, and sodium - known to be present in Martian rocks - could be dissolved in the water to form a brine.
The news is quite exciting for the prospects of life on the Red Planet, because water is essential for life.

If you're now asking yourself, "Wait, didn't they already find water on Mars?" then you're not wrong. Water is especially reflective of radar, making the tool useful in the search for the life-sustaining liquid. It stretched about 12.5 miles across and looked very similar to lakes that are found beneath Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets on Earth.

"There's nothing special about this location other than the MARSIS radar on the Mars Express spacecraft is most sensitive to that region", said Duffy.

The discovery was made using MARSIS, the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding instrument, housed within the Mars Express orbiter.

Those pulses reflected 29 sets of radar samples that created a map of drastic change in signal nearly a mile below the surface. They would have to drill through the ice first to sample the water below.

"This is just one small study area", said Roberto Orosei, principal investigator of the MARSIS experiment. Further evaluation of the bright feature indicated an interface between the ice and a stable body of liquid water. The process requires a detailed understanding of the radar signals that were transmitted downward toward Mars by Mars Express. They do not know whether it's an underground pool or just a layer of sludge.

North Korea Returns 55 Sets Of US Soldiers' Remains
According to DPAA, North Korean officials have indicated they possess as many as 200 sets of remains recovered over the year. The remains are expected to be flown to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii for scientific testing to identify them.

Either way, the discovery greatly increases the chances of extraterrestrial life existing on Mars.

"It could be really significant and alter the way we are trying to find life on Mars", said Vincent Chevrier, a University of Arkansas, Fayetteville assistant research professor at the school's Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Sciences.

A few years ago, biologists found more than 3,500 unique gene sequences in Lake Vostok which had been isolated for more than 15 million years; Lake Vostok gets no sunlight with it being 4,000 metres below the ice and has a recorded temperature of -89.2c, showing life to be hardy. These days, the planet is-by human standards, anyway-nhospitably cold and dry.

If that is how it is then it would be the first confirmed news of liquid water ever detected on the Red Planet.

The high levels of salt in the water might make the environment tough but not impossible for life.

Speaking in a recorded interview released by Science, Prof Orosei revealed that his team spent years checking their results before being confident enough to announce the discovery. But there hasn't been evidence of stable bodies of water until now, the researchers said.
