Are they deadly? Are they free speech? Explaining 3-D printed guns

Eight states are already filing suit against the Trump administration over its decision to allow a Texas company to publish downloadable blueprints for a 3D-printed gun, contending the hard-to-trace plastic weapons are a boon to terrorists and criminals and threaten public safety.

"There is a possibility of irreparable harm because of the way these guns can be made", Judge Lasnik said.

On Monday, several states-including Washington, New York, and Massachusetts-filed a lawsuit against Defense Distributed, a nonprofit from Texas native Cody Wilson that plans on uploading a whole library of 3D-printed gun designs on August 1.

They said the Trump administration had failed to explain why it settled the case and that its decision violated their ability to regulate firearms and keep citizens safe.

Yesterday, Donald Trump raised concerns about the sale of plastic guns made with 3-D printers and said on Twitter he had talked with the powerful National Rifle Association lobbying group about the weapons.

During his 18-month presidency, which has seen a fresh wave of mass shootings at schools and public places, Trump has occasionally seemed to favor tougher gun regulations, before buckling under pressure from his base and donors.

Gun access advocacy group Defense Distributed was due to put downloadable gun blueprints online on Wednesday.

"This is where we are taking gun rights in the future, in the future all guns will be made by 3D printers, all cars will be made by 3D printers", said Alan Gottlieb with the Second Amendment Foundation.

But US District Judge Robert Lasnik has now issued an order that prevents that, for now.

- North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein said the Tar Heel State is not among the states that have filed suit against the Trump Administration in an effort to stop the publication of the instructions for 3D-printed guns, but his office says he is looking into the issue.

President Trump on Tuesday weighed in on 3D-printed guns - a day after eight USA states sued the government for an emergency ban on blueprints for the potentially untraceable weapons.

The settlement says Wilson and Defense Distributed can publish plans, files and 3-D drawings in any form and exempts them from the export restrictions. Officials say 1,000 people have already downloaded blueprints for AR-15 rifles.

Defense Distributed founder Cody Wilson - then a 25-year-old law student - posted designs for the gun online so that other people could duplicate it.

A USA federal judge in Seattle has blocked the release of software that allows consumers to 3D-print firearms.

He added that it didn't "seem to make much sense!".

People can use the blueprints to manufacture plastic guns using a 3D printer. "The administration supports this almost two-decade old law".

Since the legal action began, Defense Distributed has been working on new gun designs and has also created a milling device - known as Ghost Gunner - that can turn parts purchased online into a fully working weapon.
