Man's legs amputated after dog's licks lead to infection, family says

Harmful bacteria from a dog's saliva gave the Wisconsin man a rare blood infection that forced doctors to amputate, The Washington Post reports . Contact with a dog's saliva, which is likely what happened to Greg Manteufel, is enough to cause an infection.

Dawn Manteufel said her husband was perfectly healthy just a month ago and especially loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Within hours of arriving in the hospital, his body went into septic shock.

"It hit him with a vengeance", Dawn Manteufel, his wife, told the news outlet. "Looked like someone beat him up with a baseball bat".

The infection caused Greg's blood pressure to massively drop, which meant that the circulation was cut off and eventually led to the loss of his legs.

Manafort hid millions in foreign accounts, USA prosecutor says
Manafort spent more than $100,000 at the store in 2010, and more than $444,000 in 2013, according to Katzman. But it ultimately said this wasn't enough to look past Manafort's conduct and set him free from jail.

In a review of more than 450 patient cases, just 27 percent had contracted the bacteria from scratches, licking, or unspecified contact with dogs or cats.

"We can't wrap our heads around it", Dawn Manteufel told the reporters.

"He told the doctors, 'Do what you have to do to keep me alive, '" Dawn Manteufel said. According to a GoFundMe page set up for Manteufel, he will need nose repairs and and additional surgeries and medical care to recover.

'It took a week and they were taking his legs. Now, after losing both legs and parts of both hands as well as his nose, Manteufel faces a long road to recovery and rehabilitation. Possibly. If you own a cat or dog be aware that Capnocytophaga Canimorsus is a normal bacteria that grows in the mouth of up to 60% of dogs and 17% of cats. "He had somehow contracted the bacteria Capnocytophaga Canimorsus", reads the post on the family's GoFundMe page. Within days of being admitted to the hospital while still fighting for his life, Greg first lost both feet, after a second surgery to remove more damage on legs, they amputated thru both kneecaps. Manteufel also spent his entire life around dogs, which makes the blood infection all the more surprising. Officials say three in ten people who get infected die from it.

The bacteria, called Capnocytophaga canimorsus, "just attacked him", Dawn said, and it did so quickly and aggressively. "People with weakened immune systems include, for example, those who drink alcohol excessively, who have had their spleens removed, and who have HIV infection or cancer".
