Trader Joe's, Kroger wraps and salads may be affected by parasite

The affected items were distributed nationwide to stores including Trader Joe's, Kroger and Walgreen's.

A public health alert has been issued by the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) warning consumers not consume certain pre-packaged salads and wraps from major retailers, including Walgreens, Kroger and Trader Joe's, over concerns about possible parasite contamination.

Caito Foods discovered the issue when their lettuce supplier, Fresh Express, sent notification that the chopped romaine used in some of their salads and wraps was being recalled, according to the FSIS.

Symptoms of Cyclospora infection include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite and weight, cramping, bloating or increased gas, nausea, fatigue, and low-grade fever.

The products, which were distributed by Caito Foods of Indianapolis, all have "sell by" dates ranging from July 18 to July 23, meaning consumers should check their refrigerators.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said Wednesday that the positive samples from recalled McDonald's salad were confirmed using a new method that helps the agency investigate and identify the Cyclospora parasite.

Thomas Markle: "'It would be easier for Meghan if I died"
Thomas, 74 , missed the royal wedding after suffering a heart attack but he said it might be better for Meghan if he died. But when he tried to call her, he said, the number didn't work, leaving him with no way of contacting his daughter.

If you are anxious you have consumed a recalled item, contact a medical professional. A full list of the affected products is available here, and the product labels are available here.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them.

People can become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with the microscopic parasite.

According to the CDC, the symptoms of Cyclospora infection can last anywhere from a few days to a few months. They should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

Last month, Chicago-based McDonald's temporarily stopped selling salads at 3,000 restaurants in 14 states, mostly in the Midwest, after a cyclospora outbreak sickened hundreds of customers, including 228 reported cases in IL alone, according to the state's Department of Public Health. They have the establishment number "EST". The fast food giant's salads are also supplied by Fresh Express. Cyclosporiasis can be treated with antibiotics.

No illnesses have been reported.
