Murray needs seven match points to win Citi Open opener

It is obviously not where I would want to be ranking-wise but the good thing is, when you are up at the top of the game, it is not easy just to move up one spot. It is just nice to get through.

If Murray comes back to beat McDonald, he will next face Kyle Edmund in the second round.

Murray's serving was poor at the beginning of the contest, but he gradually raised his level before converting his seventh match point and celebrating passionately.

He took part in the Queen's Club and Eastbourne events earlier in the grass-court season, losing to Edmund at the latter, but a reunion is on the cards on the hard courts of the U.S. capital providing Murray overcomes a player who reached the fourth round of Wimbledon. I was struggling on my serve and didn't feel like I had much rhythm.

One of Murray's four first-set double faults surrendered a break in the third game and Murray's seventh consecutive lost second-serve point gave McDonald a 3-2 edge when the American hit a forehand victor.

The match began after 10 pm on Monday because of a rain delay and ended at about 12.45 a.m. on Tuesday.

Ivanka Trump Blames Family Separation At Border On Parents
The president reportedly told lawmakers the night before reversing course that Ivanka had voiced concerns about the policy. Trump sparked backlash when she posted a picture of her playing with her daughter at the height of the separation crisis.

But Murray immediately broke back - in a game that included a controversial call when McDonald's racket was adjudged to have crossed the plane of the net with the score 30-30 - before serving out to reach the second round.

Now ranked 832 in the world, Murray composed himself and broke serve in the opening game of the second set, only to hand the break straight to McDonald. McDonald then hit a forehand long to give Murray another chance to serve for the match. "It takes time after you've been out for a long period to get the match sharpness back".

Noah Rubin, United States, def. Mikhail Youzhny, Russia, 6-4, 6-4.

That probably mattered more than the result to Murray, a 31-year-old from Britain who pulled out of Wimbledon on July 1 because, he said at the time, it "might be a bit too soon in the recovery process" for his hip to try to compete in best-of-five-set matches.

Tunisia's Malek Jaziri booked a second-round match against third-ranked defending champion Alexander Zverev of Germany by defeating Russian Evgeny Donskoy 6-4, 6-1.

Murray has been warming up for his return in the company of former England football captain Rooney, who joined him on court for a lighthearted session.
