Six dead in Zimbabwe on day of violence linked to election

The opposition is nearly certain to challenge the results in the courts or in the streets.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said results will begin to be announced at 10pm local time on Thursday.

Opposition supporters protested in Harare over alleged vote-rigging, which led to six deaths on Wednesday.

On the other hand, China called Zimbabwe's election "orderly" and urges Zimbabweans to maintain peace and stability.

"Violence can not be part of that process", it added.

Riot police raided the headquarters of the MDC Alliance, and detained about 10 people.

The government has accused the MDC of inciting Wednesday's unrest and vowed to enforce a security clampdown. He and several others are suspected of the crimes of "possession of unsafe weapons" and "public violence", according to a copy of a search warrant seen by The Associated Press.

Dawn Manteufel said her husband was perfectly healthy just a month ago and especially loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Contact with a dog's saliva, which is likely what happened to Greg Manteufel, is enough to cause an infection.

Before the police stormed the MDC headquarters, Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora said 27 party workers carrying out voter tabulation were locked inside its offices by officers who had sealed off the building. He said he suspected police wanted to plant evidence to incriminate officials.

The long-time leader was forced out by the military past year following massive street protests.

Mnangagwa, a long-term Mugabe aide nicknamed "The Crocodile", offered his condolences to families of the victims of the crackdown and said those responsible would be brought to justice. Thousands of jubilant Zimbabweans celebrated in the streets of Harare, greeting the military with selfies and cheers. The Zimbabwe Election Commission was still to announce the results of Monday's presidential election, the first since Robert Mugabe was ousted a year ago.

A credible election after past votes were marred by violence against the opposition and alleged irregularities is crucial for the lifting of worldwide sanctions and for the badly needed foreign investment to help Zimbabwe's long-collapsed economy revive.

"It was a reminder, as opposition leader Chamisa declared Thursday, that "'We have removed Mugabe but not Mugabe-ism".

Residents in Harare, including Sifas Gavanga, spoke of their frustration at the violence.

The 94-year-old former president Mugabe, who ruled the country for 38 years, was pushed out of office by the country's military in November 2017. "I see greater potential for us to expand our corporation", he said.
