U.S. prepares to reinstate Iran sanctions

"He will meet with the Iranian leadership at any time to discuss a real comprehensive deal that will contain their regional ambitions, will end their malign behavior, and deny them any paths to a nuclear weapon", said one official.

It will also ban EU businesses from complying with those U.S. sanctions, unless they get exceptional authorisation from the European Commission. "The pressure will not relent while the negotiations go on", said Bolton, one of the administration's main hawks on Iran.

A senior USA administration official told reporters that at 12:01 a.m. on August 7 Washington will start enforcing sanctions impacting several trade categories, including the purchase of US dollars, the sale of precious metals, transactions involving Iranian currency, the issuance of Iranian debt, and the Iranian regime's automotive sector.

"An informed diplomatic source said Sunday that Saudi Arabia had agreed to grant a visa to the head. of Iran's interests section", reported the state-owned IRNA Iranian news agency adding that "Observers saw this.as a positive diplomatic step in Tehran-Riyadh relations".

Trump has rejected pleas from U.S. allies not to unilaterally drop out of the deal. Renewed sanctions targeting Iran's oil industry and banking sector will resume on November 4.

The prospect of sanctions has already hurt Iran's economy, with the rial currency falling this year and the government cracking down on protests. The currency's collapse and soaring inflation have sparked sporadic demonstrations in Iran against profiteering and corruption, with many protesters chanting anti-government slogans.

Trump has amplified tensions with Tehran and last month addressed a bellicose tweet to the Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, that threatened the prospect of military conflict.

"You can not expect to talk to a person, after you stab him and leaving the knife in his body", Rouhani, speaking in Persian, told IRIB state televison.

"We are always in favor of diplomacy and talks", Rouhani said, according to Reuters. But talks need honesty. The president's comments came after Rouhani claimed that a war with Iran would be the "mother of all wars". "The judiciary should find these people and arrest them", the cleric says, to chants of "Allahu Akbar" from the crowd.

The move, which follows through on Trump's May 8 vow to unilaterally withdraw from the multinational nuclear agreement, cheered Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and members of the president's party, who had long railed against the deal.

"All remaining United States nuclear-related sanctions will resume effective November 5, 2018".

Rouhani maintained that Iran can rely on China and Russian Federation to help its oil and banking sectors as the U.S. ramps up sanctions in the coming months.

ATR, jointly owned by European consortium Airbus and Italy's Leonardo, has been pushing USA officials to allow it to finish its delivery of aircraft to Iran.

"The next 90 days will see increased economic pressure", an official said.

"I think this regime is on very shaky ground", he said, adding that America's economic system is being used to put pressure on Iran.

Protests broke out on Sunday for a sixth night in Iranian cities, including Kazeroon in the south, according to social media.

Trump warned on Monday of "severe consequences" for people or entities that fail to wind down economic activities with Iran.

The United States is fully committed to enforcing all of our sanctions, and we will work closely with nations conducting business with Iran to ensure complete compliance.

Preserving the nuclear deal with Iran is a matter of respecting worldwide agreements and a matter of global security.

The statement by European Union diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini and the foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, France and Germany said it would also work to keep "effective financial channels" open with Iran.
