English Premier League Report: Liverpool v West Ham United 12 August 2018

Liverpool kick-off their Premier League campaign on Sunday afternoon, as they welcome West Ham United to Anfield.

The German said: "We know about our expectations and we realise there is a really positive atmosphere around us in the pre-season".

'I'm really pleased but that's what we expected'.

"We are Liverpool; there is no one on this planet that expects more of us than we expect of ourselves. Joel did yesterday parts of training like Joe did - we will see how they are today". "We have to be ready week in, week out for the different challenges".

West Ham offered little as the hosts dominated, but Klopp was reluctant to decribe the performance as flawless.

But the Kop will be expecting three points, to ensure the ideal start to the campaign. It is a start - not flawless but really good.

Only Jordan Henderson and Dejan Lovren - albeit the Croatian returning crocked - required extended breaks from their exertions in Russian Federation and so Klopp has been afforded the luxury of a full pre-season with the majority of his squad. You see things in pre-season, but it's different.

But hey, it's the start of the season and this is the Premier League, anything can happen. You can not test before you have the test. The only problem was, Mane was clearly offside, and by the looks of the footage, the linesman had a pretty good view of the incident.

West Ham's new manager Manuel Pellegrini gave debuts to five of their 10 close-season signings, but his revamped team rarely threatened Liverpool's expensive new Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson. Their run in European was coupled with them being the only team to beat the Premier League champions, Manchester City on three occasions.

But Liverpool have won the last four meetings between the two sides, albeit only one of those was in the Premier League .

The win over West Ham was Liverpool's 27th in the league, more than they have against any other team, while West Ham have only won once at Anfield in 46 league games.

"Hopefully we are going to do something special this year".

"It's the same for the players - there is no target they can be set that is higher than that they set themselves". They deserved to win.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at how the Anfield new boys fared in the 4-0 win.

"But I think a couple of balls decided the score".

They've also enjoyed feasting on West Ham's defence in recent games, winning this fixture 4-1 back in February and also sticking four past the Londoners in their last two trips south.

"I am not complaining".

"So Naby is in because he's a really good footballer and I've said it from the beginning that he's obviously settled really quick and has a similar style of play in a similar position as he did at Leipzig".
