Russian Embassy trolls Trump campaign with its own Space Force logo

According to the Associated Press, President Donald Trump's plan for the force is complicated, expensive, and will ultimately need approval from Congress.

Critics argue that Trump's Space Force would be stepping on the toes of the U.S. Air Force Space Command, which now oversees the nation's military operations in space.

During his speech at the Pentagon on Thursday, Pence said that the Trump administration is hoping to instate a Space Force by 2020.

The Space Force would initially draw experts from existing space and military program in becoming the sixth branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.

"We need to address space as a developing war fighting domain and a combatant command is certainly one thing that we can - we can establish", Mattis told reporters. This will be the sixth service after the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Air Force.

SHAPIRO: As NPR's Geoff Brumfiel reports, not everyone agrees that a Space Force is the future.

The Space Force would be responsible for a range of crucial space-based United States military capabilities, which include everything from satellites enabling the Global Positioning System (GPS) to sensors that help track missile launches.

Congress would receive the proposals as part of a 2020 budget request.

Donald Trump's Space Force programme has only just been announced but already it has been lampooned.

"Our nation's armed forces have always been the vanguard of advancing American leadership here on Earth and beyond", Pence said.

"Initially the Department will recommend that the Air Force Space Command commander be dual-hatted as commander of the unified command", the report said.

The "Space Force" (I can't not put that in quotation marks) may even implicate Canada.

"This report is a step in a multi-year process that we think will result in a safer, stronger America", they said.

Given the stakes about building a new branch of the military, the issue is likely to be a political football.

Joan Johnson-Freese, a space security expert at the Naval War College, told Brumfiel that she doesn't think a Space Force is now necessary.

Defence Secretary Jim Mattis has endorsed steps to reorganize the military's space warfighting forces and create a new command, but has previously opposed launching a pricey, new service. "Space is an environment that we're supposed to work together peacefully in".

Mike Rogers, a Republican from Alabama, said lawmakers were "warning for years about the threats to our space assets and the unacceptably slow pace to develop more capable space systems".
