Madonna slammed for self-centered VMAs tribute to Aretha Franklin

"I was asked to present video of the year by MTV!"

Before doing so, however, the 60-year-old singer spoke briefly about her connection with Aretha Franklin, who passed away last week.

The "Rebel Heart" singer sparked a backlash with a 10-minute speech focused mostly on her own early career at Monday's live show, which organizers had said would pay honor and tribute to Franklin four days after her death at age 76.

After joking she retorted "B****, I'm Madonna" - she recalled how she left Paris and came back a few month later realising she had not "earned the luxury life I was living".

"So you're probably all wondering why I'm telling you this story", Madonna continued towards the end of her five-minute speech. It was a truly weird trainwreck to watch, and Twitter isn't letting Madonna get away with the lack of R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

She ended the speech with an emotional message: "Thank you Aretha for empowering all of us, Our R-E-S-P-E-C-T".

Danny Boyle exits James Bond movie over 'creative differences'
The James Bond franchise is on the hunt for a director - again - as Danny Boyle has officially parted ways with the franchise. Boyle was set to work alongside Trainspotting writer John Hodge , who was to create an original screenplay.

"Of course Madonna manages to make this Aretha Franklin tribute about her", one Twitter user said.

Suffering from pancreatic cancer, Franklin died in her home in Detroit on August 16 and sent the music world and her fans into mourning. "Well. Hello, sir. I would now like to present the nominees for the Video of the Year".

"You do not disrespect an ICON like that", wrote Nina Parker on Twitter.

Nearly instantaneously, there was outcry online that Madonna's "tribute" was too self-focused, as the singer hardly mentioned the Queen of Soul.

Madonna didn't take the insult lightly, however, later writing, "Anyone who wants to do a tribute to Prince is welcome to". I Love Camila! I love my dress! AND.

And apparently this wasn't the first time that Madonna had been a bit too self-indulgent when giving a tribute to a fallen music star.
