Manafort Associate Charged with Acting as Unregistered Foreign Agent

Kilimnik is also a close business associate of President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who also did political work in Ukraine and has been found guilty on eight counts of financial crimes.

Patten was a business associate of Konstantin Kilimnik, a man US authorities said has ties to Russian intelligence.

Along with being an associate of Manafort's and an employee at the OR office of Cambridge Analytica's parent company, Patten was also an old friend and regular business associate of Konstantin Kilimnik, a man suspected of having ties to Russian intelligence.

Manafort, who was sacked as Trump's campaign chairman in August 2016, was convicted by a federal jury in Virginia on tax and bank fraud stemming from his work between 2010 and 2014 for the pro-Russia Ukrainian political party Party of Regions and then-President Viktor Yanukovych.

As part of his lobbying work, Patten violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act by not disclosing the work to the USA, prosecutors said.

Mr. Manafort has also been charged with failing to register as a foreign agent for his work on behalf of pro-Russian Ukrainian interests, including the Opposition Bloc, and that trial is scheduled for September in Washington.

Prosecutors also say Patten misled the Senate Intelligence Committee during testimony in January by withholding documents concerning the payments from the committee and by giving false and misleading testimony.

"Defendant W. SAMUEL PATTEN knowingly and willfully acted as an agent of a foreign principal, to wit, the Opposition Bloc (a Ukrainian political party) and its members, without registering with the Attorney General, whose office in the Department of Justice is located in the District of Columbia, as required by law", the indictment reads.

The charges against Patten come after Ryan Dickey and Brian Richardson, a pair of "relatively junior" special counsel prosecutors, have left Mueller's team. The individual paid $50,000 for the tickets, after receiving the same sum from a company controlled by Patten and an unnamed Russian national.

"I would like to plead guilty", Patten told Jackson during a hearing.

The description of the oligarch, including his attendance at Trump's inauguration and the placing of an op-ed in February 2017 by Patten, appeared to match that of Serhiy Lyovochkin, an Opposition Bloc lawmaker and Yanukovych's former chief of staff.

Patten was informed in writing of the ban, court papers say. Beginning in about 2015, the company received about $1 million for its work advising the Opposition Bloc and members of that party, including a prominent Ukraine oligarch, identified only as "Foreigner B".

Patten, 47, reached a plea deal with the Justice Department.

Patten was released on his own recognizance Friday without a sentencing date. He faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Kilimnik left IRI around 2005 to work for Manafort in Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, starting as the American consultant's translator and eventually being named manager of Manafort's Ukrainian office.

The work involved setting up meetings in January 2015 with officials in the executive branch and members of Congress, to influence US policy.
