Arizona governor will appoint former Sen. Jon Kyl to succeed John McCain

Fighter jets roared over the US Naval Academy on Sunday in a final tribute to former Senator John McCain as the Vietnam War hero and two-time presidential candidate was laid to rest at the military college that began his career six decades ago.

A day after a nationally televised memorial service at Washington's National Cathedral brought together a remarkable gathering of luminaries from both parties - including three former presidents, but not the current one - Sunday's ceremony was designed more as a family affair, including the military family to which McCain proudly belonged.

"Senator Kyl is prepared to hit the ground running".

Kyl has been helping guide Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's nomination through the Senate, and has been a lobbyist for a Washington law firm.

Ducey signaled Kyl could be sworn into the Senate in the coming days and pushed back against allegations that the appointment was a politically-motivated move based exclusively on the supreme court nomination. "I am deeply grateful to senator Kyl for agreeing to succeed his friend and colleague of so many years". Trump had announced in advance that he wouldn't attend McCain's funeral held last Saturday, but news later got out that the senator had actually left instructions prior to his death banning the president from his funeral.

But he only committed to serve until January 2019, raising the prospect of requiring Ducey to again appoint a replacement until the seat is up for re-election in November 2020.

"There is no one in Arizona more prepared to represent our state in the U.S. Senate than Jon Kyl", Ducey said of his fellow Republican in a statement.

Twenty-four sitting US senators, four former senators and other leaders were among those expected at Thursday's memorial. The hearse is accompanied by Arizona Highway Patrol motorcycle troopers and vehicles with family members.

McCain, who died of brain cancer at age 81 on August 25, would have been up for re-election to his seventh term in November 2022.

Jon Kyl, shortly before he retired from the Senate. "We all know she's devastated by the passing of her father but, boy, she said during her eulogy, those of you who didn't see it, she said John McCain told her [to] show them how tough you are and, my God, she showed everyone how tough she is".

The replies to his tweet were mixed, with many seeming to believe that it was a direct attack on the McCain family and the senator's daughter's comments at the service.

Kyl spent 18 years in the US Senate before retiring in 2013 as a ranking Republican. "No", he said. "And I don't wish I was still there".

"I look forward to welcoming Jon Kyl back to the Senate", he said.

Before the burial, Mr Graham appeared on CNN, saying: "I'm going to try to focus on the fact that I'm going to admit to what I've lost. But I think there's a happy medium".
