Siding was peeled off some houses, but Mayor Jeff Collier said "for the most part, we did OK".

Laura Cunningham, 10, left, Hunter Shows, centre, and Brandon Perry, 10, right, watch the waves crash from Tropical Storm Gordon on September 4, 2018 in Dauphin Island, Ala. However, this morning (Sept. 5) it has weakened to a tropical depression, according to a public advisory from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Flooding also was a risk.

Trucks with the Alabama Department of Transportation work to block off a flooded part of US Highway 98 while fighting rain from Tropical Storm Gordon on Wednesday in Spanish Fort, Ala. Additional weakening is expected as Gordon moves farther inland.

Coastal areas from the Florida Panhandle to Louisiana could experience 4-8 inches of rain, with isolated totals of 12 inches through late Thursday that could cause risky flash flooding and "life-threatening" storm surge, according to the hurricane center.

The centre predicted total rain amounts of 10 to 20 centimetres in the Florida panhandle and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa and IL.

THURSDAY: Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms likely Thursday, with high temperatures back into the upper 80s.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency lifted evacuation orders and curfews for south Mississippi residents on Wednesday, said Ray Coleman, spokesman for the agency. It was moving relatively quickly, at about 15 miles per hour. A 45 miles per hour wind gust can't be ruled out in southwestern parts of our area.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards issued a state of emergency and authorized the activation of 200 National Guardsmen to be positioned in the southeast of the state.

Tropical Storm Gordon never became a hurricane but it was deadly just the same. They stayed near the edge of the water as a stiff breeze from the south rarely relented.

Boaters are evacuating to safe harbors, and motorists are fleeing barrier islands as the Gulf Coast hustles to get ready for the storm.

This satellite image is from shortly before landfall, around 1 p.m. CDT Tuesday. Police planned to monitor the only highway to the mainland. They were likening conditions to 2017's Hurricane Nate, which was mostly a rainmaker by the time it got there.

"You just blend it into your lifestyle when you live outside the levee system".

"You don't know what the intensity of the storm is going to be. The good part about it is the water goes down faster here", said Cazaux, who has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years.

The hurricane center's maximum forecast track is for five days - so what happens after Monday is what has everyone watching the storm. Hurricane Florence is some 2,400 miles away from the usa, and lining up behind it, another potential storm is likely to form off the coast of Africa.

Had the storm remained a hurricane when it hit land, it would have been the first hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. in the 2018 hurricane season.
