Ex-Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos jailed for 14 days

Ex-Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos jailed for 14 days

Appearing in federal court, the former businessman was sentenced to 14 days in prison for lying to federal investigators employed by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Papadopoulos, the first campaign aide sentenced in special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation, said he was "deeply embarrassed and ashamed" for having lied to FBI agents during an interview past year and acknowledged that his actions could have hindered their work.

"I made a awful mistake", Papadopoulos said a courtroom statement.

Prosecutors sought a sentence of up to six months, while defence lawyers asked for probation.

Russian Federation has denied USA allegations that it interfered in the campaign and President Trump denies campaign collusion.

Judge Randolph D Moss said the sentence could have been higher but he sensed "genuine remorse" from Papadopolous.

Out of the 35 people and entities so far charged, Papadopoulos is one of five who have pleaded guilty and the second to be sentenced. "It was at best, begrudging efforts to cooperate".

India's top court decriminalizes homosexual acts

Trump has regularly lashed out against the sprawling probe he dubs a "witch hunt" driven by his Democratic foes.

Former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos exits U.S. District Court after his sentencing hearing, in Washington, U.S., September 7, 2018.

Papadopoulos, who was initially interrogated on January 27, 2017 by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents regarding his work for the Trump campaign, was arrested at Washington-Dulles International Airport on July 27, 2017 and arraigned the following day.

He portrayed Papadopoulos as a naive young man who was "being worked by a pro", a reference to Professor Mifsud, whom he later said he believes was working for Russian Federation and trying to take advantage of his client.

"The defendant did not provide 'substantial assistance, ' and much of the information provided by the defendant came only after the government confronted him with his own emails, text messages, internet search history, and other information it had obtained via search warrants and subpoenas", the court filing said.

They said Papadopoulos's initial lies hindered investigators' ability to effectively question, challenge or detain Joseph Mifsud, the London professor who had contacted him. The FBI canceled the meeting when it discovered that Mr. Papadopoulos had sat down for a media interview about the case. Papadopoulos had told investigators that the conversation happened before he became a Trump campaign adviser, when in fact he had worked for the campaign for more than a month at the time.
