Nadal advances to US Open semi-final

The defending champion needed almost five hours to defeat ninth seed Dominic Thiem in a deciding tie-break after losing the opening set 6-0 and will face Juan Martin del Potro on Friday in a rematch of last year's semi-final.

Ninth seed Thiem became the first player since Andy Roddick in 2004 to win a love set against Nadal in NY but the defending champion once again dug deep to come out on top of a gruelling battle played in more punishing humidity.

At the end of four hours and 49 minutes, at 2:04 am NY time, that's the word Thiem was left ruing.

Del Potro, the No. 3 seed, got to the semifinals by defeating No. 11 John Isner 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

"It was a great battle", Nadal said immediately after the match.

It was Nadal's fourth time in 282 career Grand Slam matches when he started with a 6-0 loss.

Having survived an epic against Karen Khachanov in the third round, Nadal again dropped a set to Nikoloz Basilashvili but recovered to win in four, while Williams was pushed to a deciding set for the first time by Kaia Kanepi.

He added: "If he doesn't believe today, he might as well shake hands", Rusedski said on Amazon Prime's coverage before the match.

In the fifth, Nadal held three break points at 5-all, love-40, but Thiem took the next five points told serve.

Republicans have declined to seek the papers, and instead have gathered documents from his work as White House counsel to Bush. Senator Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., the judiciary panel's top Democrat, echoed the sentiment of the protesters.

Rafael Nadal acknowledged he was fortunate to claim a thrilling US Open quarter-final victory over Dominic Thiem, who he conceded did everything possible to claim victory. Yeah, it was [a] question of little bit of luck at the end. "Not insane, but tough", Nadal said.

"If we skip the first set, it was a really open match from beginning to the end".

"He has plenty of time to win big tournaments and has everything". Not only was Nadal two points from losing at 5-all in the closing tiebreaker, but he finished with fewer total points, 171-166. And I played against a great opponent.

The Austrian was heartbroken but proud, saying: "It's going to be stuck in my mind forever". He is a fighter with a great attitude so that is the most important thing.

With Thiem serving at 5-6 30-30, a desperate lunging forehand looked to be easy pickings for Nadal at the net only for the 32-year-old to net it.

Nadal evened the match by breaking in the final game of the second set.

"The conditions were tough, a lot of humidity".

Stiller felt the intensity of the match and was often seen displaying the kind of nerves he had while taking his lie detector test in "Meet the Parents". Thiem collected 24 of the opening set's 31 points, thanks in large part to a 13-3 edge in winners. I don't want to lose against anybody. Within the quarterfinals, the Tandil native defeated American John Isner with a rating of 6:7 (5:7), 6:three, 7:6 (7:four), 6:2.
