Novak Djokovic dismisses Del Potro to win 3rd US Open title

Novak Djokovic dismisses Del Potro to win 3rd US Open title

A dialed-in Novak Djokovic won his 14th Grand Slam title, and third US Open crown, with a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 final victory over Juan Martin del Potro.

An eight-time finalist in NY who had only previously lifted the trophy in 2011 and 2015, the Serbian was made to work hard on Sunday as Del Potro came from a break down in the second and third sets.

The Novak Djokovic vs Juan Martin del Potro US Open 2018 men's singles final match will be played at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in NY.

The 31-year-old Serb is now even with Pete Sampras for the third-most major trophies for a man in tennis history, trailing only Roger Federer's 20 and Rafael Nadal's 17.

Porto has performed par excellence in the tournament, winning his first 12 sets in a row and toppling his 1st 2 opponents in under 2 hours each.

However, Del Potro and his mighty forehand came to the party, striking back in spectacular fashion to level at 3-3, while the support for the giant Argentine appeared to rattle Djokovic's concentration levels.

"I want to say Pete, I love you, you're my idol", said Djokovic of Sampras. It will be Djokovic's second back-to-back final after winning the Wimbledon in July after returning from injury.

Djokovic was soon 3-1 up in the second set before Del Potro carved out his first break point of the match to level at 3-3.

It is Djokovic's thid U.S. Open title and first since 2015.

Djokovic has 13 Grand Slam titles, while Del Potro has just one, a U.S. Open championship he wrested from then-defending champion Roger Federer back in 2009.

There's no doubting which of the singles finals at the US Open will be remembered more, but Novak Djokovic's achievements on Sunday night were certainly historic.

Djokovic sprinted into a 3-1 lead in the third set before a battling Del Potro clung on, hitting back for 3-3.

As for an emotional Del Potro, who was back in a Grand Slam final for the first time since he won his only title at Flushing Meadows in 2009, he was at least rightly proud of hauling himself back to the top of the game after a spate of disgusting injuries.
