John Legend becomes youngest person to reach EGOT status

John Legend is now a member of the prestigious "EGOT" group after winning the award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for his performance on Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sunday night. They previously won an Oscar for "La La Land", and a Tony and a Grammy for "Dear Evan Hansen".

Lopez is the only person to ever achieve a "double EGOT" - this is when the person has two or more awards in each of the categories. With the just passed award ceremony, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice - who also worked on Jesus Christ Superstar as composer and lyricist - also achieved their EGOT. He has won an Oscar for Best Original Song for his song "Glory", which featured in the 2014 film Selma.

But the celebration may continue as Legend, 39, who played Jesus in the musical, is also up for another trophy for outstanding actor in a limited series or movie at the Primetime Emmys next week. His Tony came later in 2017, when he produced the Broadway revival of Jitney.

He added: "I'm happy I was part of such a great show".

"Perfect", Teigen can be heard saying after Legend places his latest award.

Legend's wife, Chrissy Teigen, posted of photo of all three men cradling their Emmys with the caption: "EGOT GOATS" - a reference to the term "greatest of all time".

She captioned the video, "And I say hey, what a wonderful kind of day", referencing a popular internet joke that claims Legend looks like the animated TV aardvark, Arthur.

John now joins the ranks of other EGOT icons like Audrey Hepburn, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Whoopi Goldberg, and Mel Brooks. The remainder of the 70th Annual Emmy Awards winners will be announced on Monday, September 17 on NBC.
