The Lyon prosecutors' office is investigating possible charges of attempted murder against the suspect.

Flights were halted at an airport in Lyon after a man drove a vehicle onto the runway.

He was later detained.

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes police proceeded to arrest the man but have not yet disclosed what he is being charged with.

The airport's operator suspended all flights after what it termed an "incident", before announcing on Monday afternoon that flights were "gradually resuming" and expected to be back to normal around 6:00 pm (1600 GMT).

The driver speeds onto the runway only to abandon his vehicle as he is surrounded by officers.

According to local daily Lyon Capitale, a witness described how the man in question crashed through a glass barrier in Saint-Exupéry's Terminal One.

Local government press officer Christelle Monteagudo told the Associated Press that officials have not yet determined the motive for the incident and are ruling nothing out at this point.

A white auto can be seen speeding through a field toward the runway at Lyon's Saint-Exupéry worldwide airport on Monday.

The driver jumped out while the vehicle was still rolling and sprinted off on foot, pursued by a police van.
