White House "coordinating" second Trump-Kim meeting

White House

First there were news reports about Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward's new behind-the-scenes book, "Fear, ' which described a nervous breakdown in the Trump administration as top aides maneuvered to prevent the President from taking disastrous and impulsive missteps".

Just the day before the op-ed hit the Internet, previews of "Fear", Woodward's new book about the Trump White House, examined much the same dynamic as the op-ed.

Woodward in the book recounts how Defense Secretary James Mattis had to explain to Trump why the United States pays $3.5 billion a year to station 28,000 troops in South Korea.

In the interview, Woodward discussed his new book "Fear: Trump in the White House", and said Trump is fixated on the fact that the U.S. spends $US3.5 billion a year to station troops in South Korea in order to maintain military presence on the peninsula.

"He tells an associate, 'I have to protect the country because this will unravel a trade deal which will jeopardize one of the most important intelligence operations we have going on, '" Woodward said, adding the documents are printed in the book.

On an unrelated matter, Pence said on CBS that he has not been called for an interview by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating possible coordination between Russia and Trump's Republican presidential campaign as well as Russian interference in the 2016 US election. "It doesn't work. He's got it in his head, and when people challenge him, he will say, 'I have had those ideas for 30 years, you're wrong'".

Trump's economic adviser Gary Cohn removed papers from the president's desk to stop him from withdrawing from KORUS, according to Woodward's reporting. "Sometimes it takes time".

Several prominent figures in the book have denied quotes that Woodward attributes to them.

The book has already risen to No. 1 on Amazon's best-seller list, but Trump said the longtime Washington Post reporter and editor used "now disproven unnamed and anonymous sources".

The piece, titled "I Am Part of the Resistance" Inside the Trump Administration, has shaken the government, with scores of senior figures going on record to say they were not the author.

Woodward told CBS that the most "dangerous" moment of Trump's standoff with Kim Jong Un came when the president went to produce another provocative tweet.

During his business career, Trump wrote almost 20 books, including "The Art of the Deal".

Woodward's book - "Fear: Trump in the White House" - is to be released next week. Democrats can't stand losing.

"Have you ever done one of these books, know you talked to a source and the source comes out publicly after the publication and says, 'That's not true, '" Guthrie asked.

For example, he said that the president imposing tariffs goes against what "99.9%" of experts have recommended.

The Times said revealing the author's identity would put his or her job in jeopardy. It's very important whether this is somebody who witnessed and participated. And if Democrats, by some chance, are able to sink the confirmation of Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh-who, most likely, will be confirmed-the president's mood will become even worse.
