McMaster lifts evacuation order for 3 coastal SC counties

Packing winds of up to 220 km/h (140 mph) late Monday, Florence was expected to further strengthen and become "an extremely risky major hurricane" by the time in makes landfall in the Carolinas on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in a 21:00 UTC update.

Hurricane Florence churned Tuesday toward an Eastern Seaboard landfall as a million people were ordered to leave the coast and millions more prepared for what could be one of the most catastrophic hurricanes to hit the region in decades.

President Donald Trump declared states of emergency for North and SC, facilitating federal help, and cancelled campaign events Thursday and Friday, citing the storm.

The National Hurricane Center says storm surge from Hurricane Florence could be up to 13 feet in some areas of North Carolina.

Hurricane Florence has the potential to bring catastrophic flooding to areas of the eastern USA already soaked by heavy rain.

In a statement the centre said: "Further strengthening is anticipated, and Florence is expected to be an extremely unsafe major hurricane through Thursday". Hurricane force winds start at 74 miles per hour. That would mean more flooding rains across a large part of the U.S. South, expanding the damage, according to Chuck Watson, a disaster modeler with Enki Research in Savannah, Georgia.

According to Bloomberg, coal ash ponds in North Carolina are at risk of spilling over and unleashing toxic waste if they are hit by the storm.

Novak Djokovic dismisses Del Potro to win 3rd US Open title
Djokovic was soon 3-1 up in the second set before Del Potro carved out his first break point of the match to level at 3-3. It will be Djokovic's second back-to-back final after winning the Wimbledon in July after returning from injury.

The meteorologist added that Hurricane Florence will continue to fluctuate in size, but it is on track to be "on the upper end of size of hurricanes we've seen in the recent past", which has included devastating storms such as Matthew in 2016, and Harvey, Irma and Maria previous year.

The storm is now around 400 miles south of Bermuda and is moving at 16 mph (26 kph). Beyond the strength of the storm and the timing of its landfall relative to local high tides - even the stage of the lunar cycle - the storm surge a hurricane produces depends a good deal on layout of the coastal geography and the waters surrounding, what's referred to as the "geomorphology" of the coast. American Airlines is also letting travelers in the Caribbean change tickets ahead of Tropical Storm Isaac. Watches were in effect Tuesday for a storm surge that could reach up to 12 feet at high tide on a stretch from Cape Fear to Cape Lookout in North Carolina, forecasters said. If you are in these areas, or have ties there, take the warning and evacuation orders seriously.

WEATHER experts are continuing to warn residents of The Bahamas about the sea swells Hurricane Florence will generate this week.

He has also canceled campaign events Thursday and Friday in anticipation of the storm.

A Category 4 hurricane with 130 miles per hour winds is bearing down on the US East Coast, bringing a risk of devastating floods.

With "monumental" rainfall totals of up to 40 inches possible, "the rain from Florence may break all-time state records for rainfall from a hurricane or tropical storm", Weather Underground meteorologist Jeff Masters said.
