TROPICS: Florence expected to impact the Carolinas by end of week

The Miami-based center said in its 5 a.m. advisory that Florence was about 625 miles southeast of Bermuda, moving west northwest at 9 mph.

Beyond the damage from wind and high surf, Hurricane Florence is predicted to slow over the Carolinas where it may dump up to 30 inches of rain over much of North and SC. But the season is just now peaking, and Hurricanes Florence, Isaac, and Helene are a stark reminder that we are not out of the woods yet.

The United States was hit with a series of high-powered hurricanes previous year, including Hurricane Maria, which killed about 3,000 people in Puerto Rico, and Hurricane Harvey, which killed 68 and caused an estimated $1.25 billion in damage from catastrophic flooding in Houston.

US President Donald Trump has canceled a political rally planned for Friday in Jackson, Mississippi, over safety concerns related to Florence, his campaign said.

The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said Florence, whose maximum sustained winds have already reached 105 miles per hour, will become an "extremely unsafe hurricane" when it makes landfall. Forecasters also warned of a rising threat of life-threatening storm surge, along with the damaging winds.

Feltgen said it's important that people don't get "hung up on the cone", and prepare for the possibility of impacts in areas outside of it.

More than one million people have fled toward higher ground in a mass evacuation ordered three days before the expected arrival of Hurricane Florence.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference his state was in "the bull's eye".

Forecasters said parts of North Carolina could get 20 inches of rain, if not more, with as much as 10 inches elsewhere in the state and in Virginia, parts of Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Historically, 90 percent of fatalities from hurricanes, tropical storms and tropical depressions have been caused by water, NHC spokesman Dennis Feltgen said. It took Matheson and her husband almost the whole day Monday to drive the 60 miles off the barrier island.

Hurricane conditions are possible within the hurricane watch area by Thursday morning, with tropical storm conditions possible early Thursday in both the hurricane and tropical storm watch areas.

Researchers have noticed correlations between inactive hurricane season years that the strength of tropical cyclones close to the mid-Atlantic being stronger just the way Hurricane Florence is behaving.

Tropical storm force winds extend 80 miles from the center.

"Additional strengthening is expected over the next day or two", the NHC said, but it noted that the storm will likely weaken as it approaches the Lesser Antilles.

Meteorologists are also tracking two tropical storms which formed off the coast of Africa.

We have seen this unfold before, when out of a very quiet hurricane season develops a rapidly intensifying hurricane that barrels toward the mid-Atlantic U.S. east coast.

Hurricane Florence is bearing down on the East Coast, bringing 105 miles per hour winds and a risk of flooding.
