Sasse returns from Supreme Court hearings

Between 2001 and 2003, he stole confidential letters, notes and talking points written by Democrats about Bush's prospective judicial nominees, giving them to Republicans so those nominees could prepare for questions raised during their confirmation hearings.

Republicans did just that, prompting Kagan to publicly thank then-Ranking Member Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., and Senate Republicans for giving her "such respectful and expeditious consideration". Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, also is being closely scrutinized on Kavanaugh. "If you torpedo Kavanaugh you'll likely end up with someone worse".

Unable to come up with any substantive criticism of Kavanaugh's impressive and extensive record, which includes the 12 years he has spent as a judge on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, Democrats spent the entire first day of the hearing implementing their "protest strategy".

A group called Mainers Against Kavanaugh has scheduled a rally at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in downtown Portland to encourage Collins to vote "no".

In keeping with her deliberative approach, Collins is keeping mum as she continues her vetting process.

"I always wait until after the hearings are complete before making a decision, and I'll do so in this case as well", she told The Associated Press in an interview. It also won't change the fact that he will soon be confirmed as the next associate justice of the Supreme Court.

Asked about it by the committee's top Democrat, Dianne Feinstein of California, Kavanaugh reiterated his previous testimony that "Roe v. Wade is an important precedent of the Supreme Court". Lachance, 15, who suffers from asthma, testified about asthma rates in ME that are higher than the national average and how air pollution affects an asthma sufferer.

Kavanaugh is a conservative who could tip the court's balance for a generation.

Abortion was another main focus throughout the hearing, with Democrats portraying Kavanaugh as a judge who might vote to undercut or overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision establishing a constitutional right to abortion. But Collins said others jumped to conclusions without giving Kavanaugh due consideration.

Earlier Thursday, Kavanaugh testified that he hasn't had any "inappropriate" conversations about the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation "with anyone", adding he doesn't "recall any conversations of that kind with anyone" at Kasowitz Benson Torres. "We cleared the documents last night shortly after Senator Booker's staff asked us to", he added.

Sens. Joe Donnelly in IN or Claire McCaskill in Missouri may benefit from a court battle that energizes the Democratic base. But she's spent much of the time since his nomination looking for excuses to claim that Kavanaugh's views on Roe are uncertain. She was anti-Communist to say the least.

In one of the emails, Kavanaugh referenced a possible interim policy and wrote "the people (such as you and I) who generally favor effective security measures that are race-neutral DO need to grapple - and grapple now - with the interim question of what to do before a truly effective and comprehensive race-neutral system is implemented".

"It could be whittled away to the point of being rendered a hollow shell", King said.

Miranda, now a private attorney in Maryland, said he worked "closely" with Kavanaugh on the nominations and may have shared information that he learned from the Democratic files. King said Kavanaugh would be a "far right" judge replacing a more centrist justice, Anthony Kennedy.

The hearing opened with Democrats complaining that various documents had not already been made public by the committee's Republican leaders.

Lachance was one of several people brought before the Senate to discuss various aspects of potential Kavanaugh rulings on the Supreme Court.
