US Open outburst: Umpires to boycott Serena's matches

Chair umpire Carlos Ramos, left, talks with referee Brian Earley as Serena Williams talks with Donna Kelso during the women's final of the U.S. Open tennis tournament against Naomi Osaka, of Japan, Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, in NY. While the USTA issued a statement saying that all players could change their shirts at their chair, former ATP VP Richard Ings, who did not name a source, said that umpires had been specifically told before the tournament began that female players could not change attire on the court.

To recall, in Williams' US Open final defeat against Osaka, the latter called umpire Carlos Ramos "liar" and a "thief". "They feel that no one has their back when they have to make unpopular calls".

With Williams trailing Naomi Osaka 1-0 in the second set of Sunday's eventual 6-2, 6-4 loss, Ramos issued the six-time US Open champion a warning for allegedly receiving signals from her coach. She angrily called Ramos a "thief," pointed out that she has never cheated, mentioned how she tries to set an example for her daughter and demanded an apology.

The Serena Williams controversy has stirred resentment among tennis umpires ― and they are considering a boycott of her future matches, according to reports.

"I have my personal opinion that maybe the chair umpire should not have pushed Serena to the limit, especially in a Grand Slam final", Djokovic said in the aftermath of his US Open victory against Juan Martin del Potro. "They're thinking 'what if?'"

Williams was given a code violation warning during the final on September 8 when the umpire ruled that she was getting hand signals from her coach in the stands.

Williams, who was thwarted in her bid for a record-tying 24th Slam singles crown in losing to Japan's Naomi Osaka, said she was punished for saying something where men have said far worse without incurring such a penalty.

"Carlos Ramos is one of the most experienced and respected umpires in tennis", the statement said. Her frustration with Ramos began when she was given a code violation for being coached in-match and breaking her racket shortly after.

There is a lot of unhappiness in the umpiring community because no one is standing up for officials.

"The cartoon about Serena is about her poor behaviour on the day, not about race".

"Crisis creates an opportunity to get it right", she said.
