Woodward: Kelly, Mattis denials of his book quotes untrue

Both have released statements denying the comments.

Mr Woodward told the BBC: "People in the White House they told me, to a certain extent, they spend a third of their time stopping things that are risky or not really consistent with a policy to protect the United States and the national security".

President Donald Trump told former economic adviser Gary Cohn that strong jobs numbers were proof his tariffs were working, according to Bob Woodward's new book, "Fear: Trump in the White House".

Kelly is quoted calling Trump "an idiot", and Mattis is quoted saying Trump has the understanding of "a fifth- or sixth-grader".

During an interview on the "Today" show Monday morning, co-host Savannah Guthrie asked Woodward if Kelly and Mattis were "lying" when they denied their portrayals in his book. Trump said in his tweet.

Woodward says his sources' denials are driven by "political necessity", and are a product of the way Washington generally runs.

Woodward's said he won't name the official but was happy with his public statement. Trump asked, according to Woodward. The Trump White House has shocked him more than any of the eight others he's covered, he added, because Trump fundamentally doesn't understand that national security is more than just the USA military. The New York Times' reviewer wrote: "We knew things were bad. You showed weakness", Trump told the friend, according to Woodward.

Simon & Schuster Has Printed 1 Million Copies of Bob Woodward's 'Fear'
Bob Woodward titled his new book " Fear ", the word Donald Trump once told the journalist described "real power". It's one thousand percent correct.' And then this person has said some public things that contradict that.

Woodward described the White House as a "beehive" and said that once he had information from one source, someone else would say something or give him a document to help him piece the story together.

The White House on Monday sought to project an image of productive forward momentum, even as President Donald Trump and many of his aides remain sidetracked and preoccupied by dual accounts of a warring and mutinous West Wing.

In particular, he highlighted an instance in which Trump complained to Defense Secretary James Mattis and other staff at an NSC meeting about the expense of US forces overseas.

After the chemical attack on Syrian civilians in April 2017, which prompted outrage across the world, Mr Trump reportedly said: "Let's f****** kill him!"

He said Mattis went on to say that "If we don't keep these programs. the only deterrent option we have will be the nuclear option".

At a White House press briefing, Sanders slammed the book "Fear", from veteran journalist Bob Woodward, as "careless and reckless". "We don't take it like others - like China", Trump is quoted as saying during the July 19 situation room meeting. He also called Woodward a "liar" and a "Dem operative".
