Intense footage shows rockslide on popular Greek beach, sending waves of damage

A landslide at a beach on the Greek tourist island of Zakynthos has been caught on camera.

Authorities evacuated and shut down access to the beach, which can only by reached by boat, as a precaution.

Tons of rock broke away from the cliff face, falling down onto the popular "Shipwreck Beach" in Zante.

The other three people injured were treated and released.

Video footage of the moment showed the rock split and drop onto the shore, sending up a cloud of dust and speeding waves inland over the assorted tourists.

Authorities said most of the injuries people sustained were minor in nature, but one 34-year-old Czech tourist was taken to hospital with a fractured vertebra.

"There was a rumble and a rock fell, followed by a larger rock and then another". Local media said witnesses reported a large rock initially fell from the cliff into the sea, creating a large wave that capsized small boats.

He said: "I thought more was coming and I just started running".

Imagine the worst beach trip you possibly can.

"The water hit my feet with such force that it knocked me on to my back and covered over half of the beach".

The coastguard later called off their search, saying everyone who had travelled to the beach on the tourist boats had been accounted for.

While now, no one is missing, the coastguard called in helicopters and boats to search the area, in case anyone was trapped under the rocks. She said they heard an "almighty cracking sound" as the sheet of rock crashed down onto the beach, flooding the busy beach and capsizing boats.
