Trump orders Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of Brett Kavanaugh, Senate confirmation in doubt

"I've ordered the FBI to conduct a supplemental investigation to update Judge Kavanaugh's file", Trump said in a statement.

Leland Keyser, whom Dr. Christine Blasey Ford said was at the party where Brett Kavanaugh assaulted her, is willing to cooperate with the FBI investigation.

Flake's stunning 11th-hour move played out on national television amid heated partisan debate and raucous protests in the halls of the Capitol, where one woman cornered the Arizona senator in an elevator demanding he oppose Kavanaugh, citing her own experience with sexual assault.

Kavanaugh wouldn't answer directly when he was asked Thursday if he would agree to an FBI investigation, but said he would do whatever the Judiciary Committee wanted.

"Just started, tonight, our 7th FBI investigation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh", Trump tweeted, "He will someday be recognized as a truly great Justice of The United States Supreme Court!".

For instance, Judge Clarence Thomas, who was nominated by George H W Bush, has been a Supreme Court judge for almost 27 years and Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who was nominated by the then president Bill Clinton, has served on the bench for over 25 years.

They had the power to block Kavanaugh's confirmation on the Senate floor.

Pressed on what he thought of delaying the Kavanaugh vote to allow time for an FBI investigation, Trump said: "Well, I'm going to let the Senate handle that".

"Look at me and tell me that it doesn't matter what happened to me", she said.

Asked about the move, Trump said the lawmakers "could not be nicer" and "could not be more respectful". Trump said Democrats have orchestrated the melee over Kavanaugh - and are happy about the chaos.

The second most-powerful Republican in the U.S. Senate, John Cornyn, on Friday said the chamber would meet on Saturday at noon to vote on a procedural motion on the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

"Look at me and tell me that it doesn't matter what happened to me", said 23-year-old Maria Gallagher. "The Senate must vote!" She said an inebriated Kavanaugh pinned her to the bed and tried to remove her clothes but she broke free and ran out of the room.

"And no such nominee should be confirmed in the face of such serious, credible, and unresolved allegations of sexual assault".

On Saturday morning, after President Trump authorized a one-week Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into Ms. Ford's charges, Mr. Walsh again repeated her denial in a new statement to committee staff.

"We make this request because of the ABA's respect for the rule of law and due process under law", ABA President Robert Carlson said in a letter to Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, and the panel's top Democrat, Dianne Feinstein of California.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has questioned Kavanaugh and one of his accusers, Christine Blasey Ford, and other potential witnesses have submitted sworn statements. Lisa Murkowski and Maine Sen.

Later, Flake told reporters, "I want to support Judge Kavanaugh".

Trump, who repeatedly blasted Democratic opposition to Kavanaugh as a political "con-job", agreed. "Shawn Moody is not running to be part of Washington, D.C. ME has two duly elected United States senators, and it is their decision to make".

"People need to know that when they take action, when we take action together, when we force our electeds to listen to our stories, that's how we actually change this country ..."
