China planted chips in Apple and Amazon servers, report claims

The spying devices, which Bloomberg said have been the subject of a USA government investigation since 2015, were allegedly used for stealing data, gathering intellectual property and trade secrets from American companies. The report states that USA investigators found that the tiny microchip was inserted during the manufacturing process by the People's Liberation Army. Apple said it did not find the chips as asserted by BusinessWeek - which cited anonymous government and corporate sources. The company first discovered the chips in Supermicro servers in May 2015 and informed the Federal Bureau of Investigation about it. Apple planned on using these servers from Supermicro for its iCloud services.

Amazon and Apple denied the Bloomberg report.

According to Bloomberg, the spy chips were designed for motherboards - the nerve centres for computer equipment - used in data centres operated by Apple, Amazon Web Services and others. It's said that a branch of the People's Liberation Army that specialises in computer attacks were responsible for the unsafe chips being implemented on motherboards that would eventually make their way into servers of some of the largest corporations in the world.

At no time, past or present, have we ever found any issues relating to modified hardware or malicious chips in SuperMicro motherboards in any Elemental or Amazon systems.

The Chinese foreign ministry also denied the allegations and said the country is a "resolute defender of cybersecurity".

United Nations’ Court Orders The Trump Administration to Lift Iranian Sanctions
U.S. lawyers argued that the ICJ should not have jurisdiction and that Iran's assertions fall outside the bounds of the treaty. He said the administration would review all accords that might subject the U.S.to prosecution by global courts or panels.

An Apple spokesperson said: "We are deeply disappointed that in their dealings with us, Bloomberg's reporters have not been open to the possibility that they or their sources might be wrong or misinformed". We also want them to know that what Bloomberg is reporting about Apple is inaccurate.

On Thursday, Bloomberg reported that the company at the heart of the matter is Super Micro Computer, also known as Supermicro, which is one of the largest suppliers of server hardware, workstations, storage, and GPU systems worldwide.

According to the Bloomberg report, the microchips, which were the size of a grain of rice, provided China with a way to remotely access the computers. Not part of the motherboards' original design, the malicious chips are believed to have been implanted at factories run by Chinese manufacturing subcontractors and created to offer "long-term access to high-value corporate secrets and sensitive government networks".

Chinese military members were able sneak the compromised microchips into various Chinese factories where the motherboards were assembled, the report said.

"While we would cooperate with any government investigation, we are not aware of any investigation regarding this topic nor have we been contacted by any government agency in this regard", Super Micro's statement said. Apple, which has since severed ties with Supermicro for what it says are unrelated reasons, says it has never found "malicious chips" in its products. Apple never had any contact with the Federal Bureau of Investigation or any other agency about such an incident.
