Senators Collins, Manchin back Kavanaugh, paving way for confirmation

Susan Collins decided the fate of a question consuming Capitol Hill, Washington and the country for the past three weeks - and barely 24 hours later, that question's answer was cemented when the Senate voted 50-48 to confirm Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court. "I know that my tone was sharp, and I said a few things I should not have said". "We must always remember that it is when passions are most inflamed that fairness is most in jeopardy".

Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court has been decided. "Informed by Alexander Hamilton's Federalist 76, I have interpreted this to mean that the president has broad discretion to consider a nominee's philosophy, whereas my duty as a senator is to focus on the nominee's qualifications as long as that nominee's philosophy is within the mainstream of judicial thought".

Collins, Sens. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) announced on Friday that they would vote for Kavanaugh, clearing the way for the judge to be confirmed in a narrow and largely partisan vote.

Republicans hold a bare 51-49 majority in the Senate.

The lone Republican to oppose the nomination was Murkowski, who told reporters that while she believes Kavanaugh is "a good man", she also felt the confirmation process had become about something "bigger than a nominee". Both he and Collins attempted to express a belief that Dr. Blasey Ford was assaulted, but not by Kavanaugh. Mr Kavanaugh would actually only need a 50-50 vote, as that would force a tie-breaker in his favour from Vice-President Mike Pence.

Manchin said he had reservations about Kavanaugh because of the sexual misconduct allegations against him "and the temperament he displayed in the hearing".

However, the club insist that is not the case, with a spokesperson telling Omnisport: "It's all nonsense". The tail is wagging the dog at the football club. "Get some control back, get some leadership".

Kavanaugh's confirmation seemed all but sure on Friday when key Republicans and one Democrats, who had been undecided on the nomination, said they would support the judge.

The quick swearing in enables Kavanaugh to begin work immediately in advance of arguments at the court Tuesday in two cases involving prison sentences for repeat offenders.

In final remarks just before the voting, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said a vote for Kavanaugh was "a vote to end this brief, dark chapter in the Senate's history and turn the page toward a brighter tomorrow". That is a state that President Donald Trump won by a very large margin - by more than 40 percentage point, in fact. She voted "present", balancing out Daines' absence.

Mr. Trump called the Kavanaugh confirmation process - and ensuing backlash - a "rallying cry" for the GOP. They said he also seemed ready to rule for Trump if federal authorities probing his 2016 campaign's alleged connections to Russian Federation try to pursue him in court.

The vote today followed Friday's decision to end debate on the nominee, who had been accused of sexual misconduct by several women when he was in high school and college.

Kavanaugh would replace the retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, who was a swing vote on issues including abortion, campaign finance and same-sex marriage.
