Chicago police officer convicted in 2014 fatal shooting of teen Laquan McDonald

He was charged with first-degree murder, but the jury had the option to determine that there were mitigating factors to classify the shooting as a second-degree murder instead. "This is an emotional time for our city, and many activists are calling for people to take to the streets regardless of the outcome of the trial", Principal Brianna Latko wrote in a letter according to the Chicago Tribune.

The shooting sparked a nationwide outcry.

Van Dyke, 40, was the first Chicago police officer to be charged with first-degree murder since 1980.

In addition to the second-degree murder charge, Van Dyke was found guilty of 16 counts of aggravated battery.

Jurors also convicted him of aggravated battery, but acquitted him of official misconduct.

At prosecutors' request, Van Dyke's bond was revoked minutes after the verdicts were announced and Judge Gaughan ordered he be held in jail pending sentencing.

Van Dyke's lawyer Dan Herbert said his client was a "sacrificial lamb" by politicians who wanted to appease an angry public. The jury also had seven whites, three Hispanics and one Asian-American. The shooting is one of a series of high-profile killings of black men by white officers. The defense built their counterargument around the video not being enough evidence to accurately depict the scenario for Van Dyke. It's possible that he was legitimately fearful when he shot the teen 16 times, as he and Laurence Miller-a Florida-based clinical psychologist-testified in the former police officer's defense. Ross was processed and released, police said.

No arrests have been made, said Officer Jessica Rocco, a police spokeswoman.

All of this was deemed necessary even though, as WBEZ's Natalie Moore noted on Twitter, there hasn't been a full-fledged riot in Chicago in 50 years, and while plenty of activists took to the streets after the 2015 release of the video showing Van Dyke shooting McDonald, the marches were overwhelmingly peaceful. The woman said other officers had encountered McDonald that night and "they didn't feel the need to use deadly force".

It's unclear what will happen to the artwork from here but Branczik said it's possible that it was more valuable now. Banksy is a Bristol-born artist whose true identity - despite rampant speculation - has never been revealed.

What happened at the trial?

The crowd frequently chanted "guilty" as they would stop at major intersections and in front of Trump Tower along the way north of the Chicago River on Michigan Ave.

"[His] eyes were bugging out".

The city paid out a multi-million-dollar settlement to McDonald's family, and Van Dyke was indicted for the shooting in December of 2015.

"I shot him", he said. "I still see him holding that knife with his right hand, not letting go of it". In recent years, fatal shootings of civilians by police officers in Cincinnati, Milwaukee, North Charleston, South Carolina, and the Minneapolis area have spurred intense protests, followed by criminal charges, then by acquittals or deadlocked juries.

The clip resulted in mass protests, culminating with the dismissal of the police chief and a Department of Justice investigation into the Chicago Police Department's use of force.

The Justice Department launched an investigation, concluding in a scathing report past year that the department violates the constitutional rights of residents. Police are now investigating the threats. Voters dismissed the prosecutor in the case, who waited a year to charge Van Dyke.
